The events of the last few weeks make clear the country is about to go through an impeachment crisis. We have been there before: twice in my lifetime. The Richard Nixon affair gradually snowballed over several months until it lead to his resignation. The Bill Clinton affair basically was about sex with an intern. It never seemed as dark during l’affaire Clinton as it did for Nixon. In a way it is too bad Clinton was acquitted because then we would have had Al Gore as an incumbent President in the 2000 election. How history might have changed!
Now here we are again at a stressful time for the country. Representatives of one party will see damning evidence whereas the other party sees nothing. I am afraid few Profiles in Courage are likely to emerge unless a few Congressional members grow a spine and put country over party.
Apparently Donald Trump is obsessed with the notion that he may be impeached even if the Senate ultimately does not remove him from office. This will be a huge blow to his fragile ego. He acts like the wicked witch who is jealous of the more attractive Cinderella favored by the mirror. Serving as a complete antithesis to Obama in undermining everything Obama did, he will be tainted by the one thing Obama did not do: suffer impeachment. That will be Trump’s historical legacy.
I cannot see him resign office graciously as Richard Nixon did. Trump could use the Hitler approach and pull the system down on everyone’s head. Also, one might ask as Trump nears the end of his term, does his removal now really accomplish much? The damage has been done unless he wins a second term.
I see another approach that would allow him to defend his pride if he gave a speech like the following.
I have been your President for almost 4 years. This has been the most successful term ever–even better than Abraham Lincoln. I will go down in history as the greatest President ever. This is despite the Democrat scum and a few Republican bums like Mitt Romney and John Kasich who have attacked me at every step to prevent me from delivering on my election promises.
In a word, I promised to make America great again and I did! The list is long, but I think you will notice some of the highlights.
I have drained the swamp in Washington.
Under my brilliant generalship, I defeated ISIS.
I have given you the biggest tax cut ever.
We have had the best economy ever and the stock market has never been better . Unemployment is historically low .
We have begun steps to build the wall keeping out undesirable immigrants and cut immigration of non-whites.
We have ended job-killing regulations proposed by those who scream the global warning myth.
I have forced China to agree to trade talks and got a better deal with Canada and Mexico in NAFTA.
I ended the burdensome requirements of Obama care.
I have gotten the NATO countries to boost their share of costs.
I have ended American engagement in several arenas as part of my America first strategy.
In essence in a little more than three years, I have accomplished everything I intended. I have finished my mission. America is great again!
Accordingly tonight I announce that I will not run for a second term. There is no need. My business affairs need my attention. I am also considering forming my own cable channel in which I would be a major host. And I want to spend more time with the children Melaniya.
I know most of you will be sad to hear that, but rest assured I will still be with you. As my great show The Apprentice, which was cheated from an Emmy, helped select good talent, I will follow the nomination process with a close eye. Everyone in my Administration was considered as an apprentice. At a later date, I may even suggest who would be best.
As for the impeachment witch hunt, I have been promised there is no longer any purpose for these proceedings. Nancy Pelosi confided in me that she thought I really was innocent. Obviously she will be forced to deny that if the press asks her. God bless America.
Do I believe any of these claims in Trump’s speech? Not for a moment. Do I think Trump will pick an out like this? Probably not unless some Republicans step forward privately. But we can always hope to end this nightmare and get back to the people’s business.
