What I find particularly disturbing–and there is much to be disturbed about–is Trump trying to play the role of Jesus Christ.
Those of us who attended church regularly as kids or even who now do so, we always heard in Sunday School that Christ died for our sins. I never could totally understand why an all-loving, omnipotent God could not just wave his hand and wash our sins away rather than kill his son, but I will leave the answer to that question to the theologians.
Trump has increasingly claimed that he is suffering for us and he is glad to do so. What a pile of dreck! He never does anything for others; it is all about him. He is playing us for suckers. When asked he couldn’t name his favorite Bible verse even though professing to be a Christian. I doubt he has ever cracked open a Bible. For someone trying to appear devout John 3:16 would have been an easy guess to complete the charade.
This is now tainting Christianity. A recent article cited many pastors hearing that their members increasingly are rejecting Christ’s teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount. Blessed is the peacemakers they opine is too weak and it doesn’t work that way. This matches up with the words of the so-called Christian nationalists. No wonder people are fleeing the churches.
