I have spent many agonizing hours over who would be the best candidate to face Trump. Let me explain why I think Amy Klobuchar is the one. Let’s walk though the other candidates in a process of elimination.
Joe Biden. I like Joe but feel his time has come and gone. Polls suggest that he could beat Trump, but I believe this polls are misleading. There is a total absence of enthusiasm for him. If the leader in the pack can’t raise sufficient money from supporters to win the nomination, I doubt they will turn out on election day even if they despise Trump.
Bernie Sanders. Another angry white guy. We already have one of those in the White House. Both he any Elizabeth Warren are too liberal and too New England. Democrats who have won have campaigned as centrists not ultra left. Republicans may be able to win with extremists, but Democrats never have. (For example, JFK campaigned as a moderate.)
New Englanders are often perceived as too liberal and too elistist by Middle America. Where have the Democratic Presidents come from since JFK? Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, and Illinois.
Pete Buttigeg. A nice guy, maybe the future of the party. But we are worried about now. Let him get some experience in other positions. Right now, it would be like Doggie Howser choosing the Presidency over medicine.
Andrew Yang Another nice guy who needs more gravitas. Also the future.
Michael Bloomberg. I can’t see the American electorate voting for someone who has unlimited wealth and uses it to win. He may have good ideas, but here I remain agnostic until voters have a chance to judge.
Amy Klobuchar She is moderate and could draw independent and even some Republican votes. Sometimes she takes the liberal position and at other times the conservative so she is not locked into any one mindset. She comes from the Midwest (Minnesota) and has years of experience in the Senate where she has worked in a bipartisan fashion on many issues. She has consistently done well in the debates. Finally, she brings this country the first female President and is a more worthy candidate for that then Clinton.
The question for me becomes: if she is the logical person, will the Democratic electorate wake up and realize that before we are doomed with another losing candidate?
